An adequate preparation of the surface is most important for best results. It is important to know that the quality of the surface sanding and cleaning will greatly influence the resistance of all wood finishing products.
IF YOU USE NEW WOOD:
The industrial wood planning step makes the surface glossy by contracting the pores of the wood. Since Alis 579 oil is an impregnating product, it is important to sand the surface adequately (100 paper) before the first application in order to eliminate the glossy finish and thus expose the pores of the wood so that the oil can penetrate deeply. However with Alis 579 this step is needed only once.
Moreover, you must know that if you choose to use treated wood or cedar, it is important to wait a whole year before staining them. In the case of treated wood, a single sanding will not be sufficient to eliminate the water proofing substance present in the wood. It has to be allowed to wear out during the winter. As for the cedar, its tannin (a brown substance that naturally comes off this species) could hinder the wood from absorbing our product.
IF YOU USE WOOD THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN TREATED WITH OIL
Again in order to make our product more efficient, one has to make sure that the wood is absorbent, clean, dust free and dry. So you should eliminate moss, algae or fungus that may have grown on the wood. We recommend using Glouros no 1806 a neutral ph cleanser specifically designed for working naturally with wood and oil. It is natural, non irritating and perfectly compatible with Alis 579. Avoid using irritating, abrasive or grease cutting products that may prevent the oil from penetrating and and thus affect the efficiency of our product. After eliminating the chemicals, the wood needs to be sanded down to its original state.
On the day before the application, cover your terrace, patio and/or your outdoor dry wood furniture with waterproof tarpaulin in order to protect it from dew.
